Obituary for Edith Roberts McCarren (Roberts)

Edith R McCarren of Abington, PA died "reluctantly" and peacefully surrounded by friends and family on Monday, May 14, 2018.

Edith McCarren was a Korean War veteran, serving in Naval Communications as a Cryptologic Officer. She enjoyed her years of service in Washington DC.

After years as a Red Cross instructor of first aid and canoeing, while raising her family, her zest for continuing education led her to a Nursing degree in 1981. This began her second career as a longtime nurse at Abington Memorial Hospital and the Philadelphia School District. She retired at the age of 82 after 35 years of nursing. A standing joke with the children was that no one could retired until she did.

Edith McCarren was a 59 year resident of Abington PA. She was involved with the Newcomers Group where she formed numerous lifelong friendships.
Edith was an active 54 year member of the Abington Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and Youth Fellowship groups.
Her home and heart was always open to friends and strangers alike sharing her "famous" homemade bread, toasted with butter. Many neighbors and friends eagerly awaited to receive their own loaf each Christmas morning.

Edith was an avid boater including being a member of Lulu Temple Yacht Club for over 30 years.

Edith was a voracious consumer of knowledge including Book Clubs,Current Events and history. As a lifelong Patron of the Arts, Edith attended Opera, plays and shows. Right up until she made her own "Exit-Stage Left".

Edith McCarren was the first female to sit on the Board of Directors of the Abington YMCA. A staunch believer in health of mind and body, Edith swam no less than 3 times a week. She could also been seen riding the tandem bike with her beloved husband Walter Ford along the Schuylkill River trail to Valley Forge National Park and the "boards" of Ocean City New Jersey.

Married to Charles E McCarren (deceased). Survived by their children, Florence Corbin (Bryan),David R (Martha), Ruth Ianozi (Albert), Rebecca M.,Martha Becker (Dave), Peter R. (Stacy)and Samuel R. (Anne).
Married Walter O Ford (deceased) in 1988. Survived by 3 stepchildren, Carolyn, Henry (Helen)and Walter (Anne). Also survived by 16 grandchildren, 6 Great grandchildren, 5 nieces and nephews and companion William Broadhag.
