Obituary for Elizabeth S. "Betty" Emery (Staab)

Elizabeth S. "Betty" Emery (Staab)
Elizabeth (Betty) Emery, 80, of Abington, died on Tuesday, April 30, 2013. Born in Montpelier, VT to the late Nellie Keyser Staab and John Joseph Staab she graduated from St. Michael’s H.S. Valedictorian in 1949 and from the College of New Rochelle in 1953 with a degree in Chemistry. She worked for Memorial Sloane Kettering in cancer research, Popular Science, and the American Salesman in NY. She was the owner of Professional Transcribing Service and a long-time member of Our Lady Help of Christians Church (OLHC). She was predeceased by her husband George Emery and is survived by her beloved daughter Kathleen Elizabeth Emery, several nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

Betty was a tireless, energetic OLHC parish and community worker for more than 50 years. Her contributions to the parish can be divided into several areas. In that of religion and liturgy, Betty served as Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) Coordinator for ten years and started the CCD teacher-training courses. She organized the first CCD Pre-School program. Betty served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years, training those entering this ministry. She served on the Archdiocesan Commission on Sacred Liturgy, the Parish Liturgy Committee and as an appointed member of the Parish Pastoral Council. She introduced the "Watch and Pray" Holy Thursday services at OLHC. Betty directed the OLHC Adult Choir for over 33 years, founded their Bell Choir, and was the leader of the OLHC Guitar Group.

As a major fund-raiser, Betty chaired parish flea markets, country fairs, fashion shows, and pizza nights. She served on the OLHC Finance Committee. She also lent her considerable talents to the OLHC Theater Guild as musical accompanist and performer.

In recent years, Betty shared her talents with the Sisters of the Holy Redeemer, bringing choir music to their liturgies and celebrations.

A viewing will be held on Sunday evening, May 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the FitzPatrick Funeral Home, 1500 Old York Road, Abington, Pa. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Chapel of the Provincialate of the Sisters of the Holy Redeemer, 521 Moredon Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA, on Monday, May 6 at 11 o'clock, following a viewing there beginning at 10 a.m. www.fitzpatrickabington.com
